As much as we have liberalized economically, our systems are not in a place that can support the elderly. The Covid-19 situation has worsened their plight. Neither the state nor large organizations are willing to reach out with a plan to alleviate their suffering. Unlike developed economies, which have structured old age recuperation mechanisms, in India, we don't have any concrete system or set up to address the woes of such old age homes. Although our focus at Sackhumvit Trust is mainly education nevertheless, there are a number of things we do to reach out to the elderly and lessen their anxiety. At Sackhumvit we provided home-cooked food and distributed personal health care items and stationery to the residents of Baliga's old age home. The residents were happy to meet visitors and enjoyed a sumptuous meal.
